• Charter Night April 21, 1938

Mr. John W. Caffey, of Greensboro, Past President of the North Carolina Association of National Exchange Clubs, Thursday evening April twenty first nineteen hundred thirty eight urged members of the newly organized Exchange Club of Martinsville to sell themselves on the idea of Exchange and practice the principles for which the great American Organization stands, putting them into their everyday life.

Mr. Caffey was the guest speaker for the Charter Night program of the local Club, held in the form of a banquet meeting at the Thomas Jefferson Hotel, presented to the Club its Charter, with George E. Morris, President accepting the gift.

B. Hairston Townes was Vice President, John W. Yearman Secretary, and John G. Ragland Treasurer.

The Service Award was presented to W. Richard Critz, President of the Exchange Club of Danville, Mr. Caffey presented a Service Award Pin, and to the Danville Club a Service Award Banner for their assistance in organizing the Martinsville Club.

The Guest Speaker in his remarks told the Club interestingly what the organization stood for. Truly an American Organization with activities limited to the United States and it’s possessions, he said.

Mr. Caffey praised the type of Virginia’s citizenship, which America had looked up to for leadership. “Exchange will look to you and your other Virginia Clubs for leadership also”, he remarked. “Let’s not make Exchange purely a ‘knife-and-fork’ Club, but find something to do, adopt a definite program of projects. Sell Exchange to your members first of all, and then go out to secure others, select only the highest type of material for your circle”.

Exchange offers its members many opportunities for service of a constructive character in the community in which it is located. You must grasp these and make your Club the outstanding organization in the Martinsville-Henry County area. Personally I think Exchange is one of the best civic groups I know of”, he further said. The President of the Burlington N. C. Club brought greeting from the North Carolina Association. In his message he explained the importance of selecting only the right type of material for your membership make-up, and that of attendance. He also dwelt at length on the principles of Exchange.

He extended members of the local Club and other Virginia groups present an invitation to attend a get-together meeting of the North Carolina Clubs at Burlington on Monday night.

Several other visitors were present and spoke briefly. Warren Olsen, National Organization of Exchange Clubs; Dr. Jesse M. Shackleford local physician; Thomas B. Stanley of Stanleytown, Henry County’s Legislator; J. M. Richardson President of the Rotary Club; M. E. Whitner, Jr. President of the Kiwanis Club; E. K. Via Vice President of the Retail Merchants Association; C. E. Reed Secretary of the local Ministerial Group; and J. S. Hackler City Engineer.

President Morris was in charge of the opening exercises after which he turned the program over to T. L. Willis.

A number of dance and musical selections were rendered by local talent. These included a dance by Miss Jennie Roach, with Mr. H. K. Whitner at the piano; Violin solo by Joe Shriebfeder, with Holiday Yeaman accompanist; dialogue by Misses Nancy Walton, and Margaret Shumate, and several Spiritual selections by Barney Mitchell’s colored quartet. Also present were visiting Exchangites from Danville, Greensboro, Burlington, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville. Fifty-five dinners were prepared and served.
